Linguistic Internship at GALCAC 2024
The Goldfields Aboriginal Language Centre Aboriginal Corporation (GALCAC) is offering internships for linguist students in their final year of study, early-career linguists looking for practical hands-on experience, or experienced linguists keen to provide their experience and knowledge to a regional Aboriginal language centre.
GALCAC is a busy and dynamic organisation. The academic staff’s work is directed by First Nations speakers of language. This work entails research and documenting of the languages of the Goldfields region, lexical data basing, phonology, morphology and grammar writing, and creation of language use, enjoyment and learning resources.
Working in a community-based language centre provides interns with an opportunity to experience anthropological and sociological linguistics. Perhaps this is the area you want to pursue for your career! If so, we’d love to hear from you.
Working from the busy language centre in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, you will be given the opportunity to:
✔ work with First Nation speakers.
✔ learn about the history of First Nations people of the Goldfields region.
✔ be trained in best-practice linguistic, field work and archiving procedures.
✔ gain first-hand experience recording and documenting an aspect of language.
✔ learn how to use a linguistic database system to manage data.
✔ gain experience reading and writing Goldfields languages orthographies.
✔ learn from experienced Australian languages linguists.
✔ undertake archiving of data.
The Intern will:
✔ have a linguistic qualification or be a final year linguistic student.
✔ be available for a minimum of 2 and maximum of 6 weeks.
✔ work five days a week, Monday to Friday.
✔ cover your own costs, including travel, accommodation and meals.
✔ see the magnificent Eastern Goldfields and experience life in a thriving regional centre!
In order to be able to get the most from your internship, please commit at least two weeks to GALCAC, excluding travel time. Additional information is available on our website: https://wangka.com.au/galc-research/linguistic-internship/
We’d love to hear about your studies on First Nations’ languages, any experience you may already have, and the direction you see your career heading.
