The Karlkurla Experience: A week in Kalgoorlie

Head to Kalgoorlie to experience the town like you’ve never experienced it before. Welcome to The Karlkurla Experience! 

The Karlkurla Experience is 5 days of authentic connection to First Nations culture and people in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, from Monday 4th July to Friday  8th of July 2022. 

Hosted by the Goldfields Aboriginal Language Centre, you can go honeyant hunting with the Tjupan people, create arts and crafts with Ngaanyatjarra artists, learn dancing with Ngadju people, and cap the week off with a ‘A Wild Day in Karlkurla’, a 6 course bush tucker degustation luncheon. 

The Kalgoorlie Aboriginal Film Festival runs through the week with free films at 6pm each evening.

‘Karlkurla’ is the Aboriginal name for the silky pear fruit. Kalgoorlie town’s name is derived from this name.

Program

Monday 4 July

9-12 Tjupan honey ant hunting tour $100 adult, $30 child This tour is a car tag-along tour. Following your guides 25 minutes out of Kalgoorlie to a site to hunt for honeyants. Afterwards, enjoy a damper and billy tea morning tea and sit around the fire chatting with your guides. Suitable for all cars, not suitable for caravans. Suitable for children. 

   

6pm film ‘Emu Runner’  free event, Orana Cinema

Tuesday 5 July

10-3 Aboriginal Cultural day 1  free event. 

Head to 3B Function Centre to join in any of the 12 art and craft workshops being held by traditional artists and crafts people. Artwork for sale.

Wednesday 6 July

10-3 Aboriginal Cultural day 2  free event

Head to 3B Function Centre in Boulder to join in any of the 12 art and craft workshops being held by traditional artists and crafts people. Artwork for sale.

6pm film ‘Sweet Country’  free event, Orana Cinema

Thursday 7 July

9-11 Ngadju Dance Class  $30 adult, $10 child. Join in with legendary Ngadju dancer, James Schultz, to learn traditional dancing skills. Suitable for all ages and abilities. James will teach you spear throwing and use of boomerangs.

9-11 Learn to Speak, Read and write Goldfields Aboriginal Languages  $33pp

This 2 hour training is your chance to learn from one of WA’s most experienced linguists. Come and learn how to pronounce the Aboriginal languages of the Goldfields region. You will also learn how to read and write the languages in a very easy way. Manual, poster and memory stick of audios provided. 

12-2    A walk in Karlkurla Park  free event. 

Come for a gentle stroll through the acclaimed Karlkurla Park in Kalgoorlie where your guide will point out various native plants, much tuckers and medicines. Suitable for all ages and abilities.

Friday 8 July

11-2 ‘A Wild Day in Karlkurla’ bush tucker degustation luncheon $250pp

This 6 course bush tucker degustation luncheon features a different bush tucker each course. Chef will create exciting new recipes just for this lunch! Beverages will be matched with the courses. A table of bush tucker ingredients will be available to browse. Aboriginal elders will provide information and short films about bush tucker collection between courses. At the Kalgoorlie Hotel on the historic balcony overlooking Hannan Street.
