Karrt, Korrt, Maara – Head, Heart, Hands: The Book of Noongar Anatomy
as told by Kellerberrin Elder Cliff Humphries

Within archives of Elder Cliff Humphries (1910-1998) can be found the largest collection of Noongar anatomical terms from a single source. The Elder was one of the last fluent Noongar speakers in the world. His collection showcases the depth of Noongar scientific knowledge embedded in the ancient language. It formed part of his body of work presented in the Bennell v. State of Western Australia, securing native title for the Noongar nation in 2006.

This book contains Elder Humphries’ collection of anatomical terms together with a link to an archival interview, recorded at his home in Kellerberrin, enabling readers to learn the correct pronunciations from the Elder himself.

Elder Humphries’ descendants are working with school students on Noongar Boodjar (Country) to return their ancestral knowledge to the community in honour of the Elder’s wishes. This book and accompanying poster was illustrated by the Class Maar (5) at the West Coast Steiner School in Nollamara, under the guidance of the Elder’s family. The artworks celebrate Noongar cultural life on beautiful pre-colonial boodja during the season Kambarang.
