Goldfields Aboriginal Language Centre

Translators and Interpreters wanted!

The Goldfields Aboriginal Language Centre (GALC) is establishing an Aboriginal Goldfields interpreting and translating service for the region. Currently there are very few people who hold interpreting qualifications.

Interpreters are needed for court appearances, hospitals and aged care, police, prisons, Centrelink and a wide variety of other services. Translating work on documents, posters, films, documentaries and a wide variety of material will also be undertaken.

People interested in training and qualifying as an interpreter must:

  1. Fluently speak a Goldfields Aboriginal language as a first language.
  2. Understand and speak English to a high level.
  3. Undertake interpreter training with GALC.
  4. Undertake assessment with the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters.
  5. Be available for interpreting jobs on a 24 hour roster.

High level literacy skills are NOT necessary, though are preferred.

Interpreters may live in remote locations, communities and stations. The work will mostly be undertaken over the phone or via video teleconferencing.

Interpreters may hold other jobs and be available for interpreting work after hours or with approved leave. Qualified interpreters will be paid a small retainer fee each week, to be available for jobs.
